- I shall tell you a tell of hardware, desperation and atrocious bad luck...
-
- My tale begins in July 1995, where I bought an SX-1 for my cute but
- lonely CD32. The ugly great box promised much, and almost
- delivered. Within the week I bought an HD and 4 megs of ram to improve
- things, and it was okay apart from the HD never booting. "Fine", said
- I. I returned the SX-1 to the shop, where it was replaced after a few
- months. Tried again. Still no HD booting, but I would have put up with
- that were it not for the duff parallel port too. That was in
- October. In March, after excessive telephony, I received my new
- SX-1... but without the hard disk and ram that I had returned (to see
- if they were interfering with each other). Even more hassle and
- phoning finally got me a replacement hd and ram; I should have gone to
- the Office of Fair Trade by then. Well, finally I had a working
- system: ram, hd and SX-1 all going along dandy. Then a few weeks ago,
- the price of ram crashes (as it were) and I thought that selling my 4
- meg simm and buying an 8 meg one would be wise. The first 8 meg simm
- that arrived did not work with the SX-1 but a PC (spit) had no
- problem. I sent it back and asked for one that did work with the SX-1,
- or else a 4 meg simm that worked and the difference. Well, this
- morning that 4 meg simm arrived... but it wouldn't work if the hard
- disk was installed. I'm using a Goliath p.s.u., so it should have
- enough power.
- Here's the worst: once I put it all back together, having resigned
- myself to just sending the SX-1 back again, I foolishly decided to
- finish a letter and print it out. I hit the power button, there was a
- smell of smoke and the power light went out.
-
- I now have to have the CD32 repaired, and I want rid of the SX-1 for
- good. Can anyone tell me if I'm jinxed, or has anyone else had this
- problem? Also, what are my chances of getting the supplier of the SX-1
- to pay for my repair?
-
- Watch out, it's an unlucky world out there...
-
